Let's see one by one our team members for 2017. Starting now with one of our the F18 sailors.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br />
We are working closely with Bolsena Yachting. We have started to talk about a strong team for a while, and it became a reality last autumn. Finally the sails got ready and the boat has arrived as well.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Marco Radman and Luca Cioni sail together since 2013. They are members of the Centro Vela Sunset, a club on the Tirrenian Sea in Tuscany mainly frequented by lovers of the two hulls (currently about 40 catamarans between F18, A cat, etc.). Until 2016 they were in the F18 Mattia Team. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
From 2017 Marco and Luca will be the part of the <b>F18 Hobie Team of Bolsena Yachting powered by 1D sails</b>.</div>

<div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We can see nice results from them as they won the Italian title in 2014, and came second in 2016. Won the Italian ranking in 2014, 2015, 2016, in addition to numerous racing regatta of the national circuit.</div>

I get many emails on how to make catamarans more effective for lighter winds. We can see many sails which is not so efficient. It has power, but cannot go forward fast. I have seen several cases on different regattas that the boat is flying a hull in really low wind, , but was very very slow. It means it has too much drag.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This whole light wind passion started several years ago, when we bought our Tornado. We have lots of light wind days on Lake Balaton. I have started to think how to pimp her. Now let's see what was done in the last two years.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYkrFPOT_9-DfPxCgcpcdnR5qFSrgEPOOICeWUVcjHSsPfgQOXj8rGIW6lDkqdwD0mVcJerEafFBDJ8RNXoKsTs5REbKonvebCwMT45x6urZJuAB29rOqURUUe25ZXSTnLnj9Y7d-uimo/s1600/10156083_1002567309763258_5628034061218782489_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYkrFPOT_9-DfPxCgcpcdnR5qFSrgEPOOICeWUVcjHSsPfgQOXj8rGIW6lDkqdwD0mVcJerEafFBDJ8RNXoKsTs5REbKonvebCwMT45x6urZJuAB29rOqURUUe25ZXSTnLnj9Y7d-uimo/s320/10156083_1002567309763258_5628034061218782489_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<span style="text-align: justify;">The very first choice was the famous Chupacabra code0, which was the "original" one from Qingdao. The next choice was the superflyer code0, which goes to the top of the mast and to the rear crossbeam. This is strictly to max 3kts wind.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally I arrived to the mainsail and jib developments two years ago.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Mainsail</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First I have made the head bigger, but with the same flying shape as our standard Tornado main. It was very very fast in very small breeze, like 1-3 knots, but as the wind picked up, started to make strange behaviours. I have played a lot with the batten stiffnesses, but ended up that sail is great for max 8 knots, but ideal is max 6kts. So I moved forward.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifVTRfC5k9zqJrdZeM4eLXYG6w9bPqN20qkdJSEseckYjaXmzhF2h5g8jkEU59FLfwNOES-g_MSQxm02oxVqMCrgSZKDgmO-n4bgd5z3-kJV4s_BfYPskWXhiWMMPUmxd57UjKRSHYGNM/s1600/11403490_1012583538761635_3043040700081669277_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifVTRfC5k9zqJrdZeM4eLXYG6w9bPqN20qkdJSEseckYjaXmzhF2h5g8jkEU59FLfwNOES-g_MSQxm02oxVqMCrgSZKDgmO-n4bgd5z3-kJV4s_BfYPskWXhiWMMPUmxd57UjKRSHYGNM/s320/11403490_1012583538761635_3043040700081669277_n.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The second version was different. Once, it was made of technora membrane. The design was a little changed, bigger luff curve, more additional camber, and different exit angles. I was waiting very much to test this sail, but it happened, before I could try it out, the sail left to the USA. Not exactly for a Tornado, but a 20 foot boat. Luckily I have got many pictures about the sail, so I had the possibility to analyse it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiprg54SL2MQz2rjqugZ8np8qmi_IQPIj70Z8UQZUuay9wUhhe82kBoDaT61CGAWyxR_PW2ssLg1J1eq6hor9jgtB86lZoBeUxbldKtNscE2TMh8n7ZQHA4YD1J34eSAX-9kC3ywP6TwOY/s1600/14322269_718938291578155_1438383636513011025_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiprg54SL2MQz2rjqugZ8np8qmi_IQPIj70Z8UQZUuay9wUhhe82kBoDaT61CGAWyxR_PW2ssLg1J1eq6hor9jgtB86lZoBeUxbldKtNscE2TMh8n7ZQHA4YD1J34eSAX-9kC3ywP6TwOY/s320/14322269_718938291578155_1438383636513011025_n.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The third version. I went to radial cut this time. It has two reasons, one, is I wanted to try out that material, and I thought in this case people doesn't really want to buy it off from my boat right away on the first day. About the shape, some luffcurve changes, slightly different head width to be more easy to handle and a cut down for the head to be flush with the top of the mast. Bigger roach on the leech, trying to balance between the power and as less drag as possible. Finally I used this main a lot. On the first run, it came out that it is a very sensitive sail. Played some with the batten stiffnesses, but turned to be a really good setup. Early hull flying, but still fast. Combined with the new jib, it was awesome.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As each from our own sails, it left to a new owner, now to Chiemsee. In the last days a sister sail was made, but from technora membrane, to Chiemsee as well.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSrrLpJ6wqth5FAEdu597jo9VRT4S8Ic-APPRS16djcLoizAMxvP1V7IechO9lmyZR6EbfbLk48jcqJjMCed1kgsQneMd6VtVuRoqfblMmhjHHOJ99AUhePxWSn0juOi7PeR6TCWeh-Xs/s1600/13232870_668841249921193_377029414874531096_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSrrLpJ6wqth5FAEdu597jo9VRT4S8Ic-APPRS16djcLoizAMxvP1V7IechO9lmyZR6EbfbLk48jcqJjMCed1kgsQneMd6VtVuRoqfblMmhjHHOJ99AUhePxWSn0juOi7PeR6TCWeh-Xs/s320/13232870_668841249921193_377029414874531096_n.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitr2SCIM-hFLA5Mnlf6SGXdXGs7vNkEbc0Cd0dA-AsZ-F2FmqeBe1Tjpz_h69oZMfMzHcAQlM0n52FyCbZ12RwnyscHa7zzSFafqmx-7VriruBaGNyPNW-Hqabsbm8YoDSI7ANmDMT-FU/s1600/17021486_808656205939696_8015706709722858141_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitr2SCIM-hFLA5Mnlf6SGXdXGs7vNkEbc0Cd0dA-AsZ-F2FmqeBe1Tjpz_h69oZMfMzHcAQlM0n52FyCbZ12RwnyscHa7zzSFafqmx-7VriruBaGNyPNW-Hqabsbm8YoDSI7ANmDMT-FU/s320/17021486_808656205939696_8015706709722858141_n.jpg" width="238" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
V4. This version lives only in my SMAR Azure folder. Yet. I haven't had time to build it, but within short time I have to do it as the season starts. I have reduced the head more, chose the radial cut again, more roach on the leech and a much better lift/drag ratio. I will write about this sail later in a different post.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Jib</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was working as much on this sail as on the mainsail. I was searching something different as our current class legal Tornado jibs, but I was not sure what I really want.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
V1. I have added more are, positive leach, it was fine, but not the one I was searching for.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
V2. Kept the positive leech, 4 battens, a slightly bigger head. It was significantly better than the previous one, and was faster. This sail went to the USA together with the mainsail.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3CwclEcJW3EdGE8PRG9KreLVegE5llDGlEx_J54XyY7wFm2lJJ9PNsBg2ipeo0_BJk3vXOEk9lk3beuvz0qkPPmfzQEKyJT80OZjBC-Sn2IAlhOR3pJTRu_yNSBWwYvGU2i7X30j33TM/s1600/14264894_718938924911425_6409389643448073268_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3CwclEcJW3EdGE8PRG9KreLVegE5llDGlEx_J54XyY7wFm2lJJ9PNsBg2ipeo0_BJk3vXOEk9lk3beuvz0qkPPmfzQEKyJT80OZjBC-Sn2IAlhOR3pJTRu_yNSBWwYvGU2i7X30j33TM/s320/14264894_718938924911425_6409389643448073268_n.jpg" width="248" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
V3. Same as V2 but different luff curve, different shape, and fat head. This was made for the black radial mainsail. This was really fast, especially in choppy conditions, I loved it very much, I thought I was looking for this sail. One day we were heading back to the marina from a nice session, the breeze picked up a little bit, and the negative sides came out. Now I know what I want. This sail landed in Chiemsee as well. Now just leaves a new membrane one there as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
V4. I put all my knowledge into this sail, I have made it from Cuben Fiber, refined shape, many time on analysis, smaller head and a much manageable leech and head for our hectic wind conditions. We have tried it, and I loved it. I made a swap in the window panel, so the bigger part is afterwards. I was just curious how it feels on water. After some session it travelled to the Netherlands to the new owner.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0Rgz5RuncP2fRZJhsrsasmFTETxFJ4a2SRWrxNTBQc3tf_pcE9gRGffTxjORCi5iNEV_ih28_4BArheGkZItILvNmqOx7GVWfnDGOxDqEuGkBAKjruG2luBpT3JGWLgkhNJ5JGil3z3s/s1600/13925361_1252607138092606_4152397090400133619_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0Rgz5RuncP2fRZJhsrsasmFTETxFJ4a2SRWrxNTBQc3tf_pcE9gRGffTxjORCi5iNEV_ih28_4BArheGkZItILvNmqOx7GVWfnDGOxDqEuGkBAKjruG2luBpT3JGWLgkhNJ5JGil3z3s/s320/13925361_1252607138092606_4152397090400133619_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
V5. No it is in SMAR Azure only as well. Now I know it will be the jib of my dreams. We will see. I have kept the all the major characteristics of V4, just refining them, changed panel layout a little, and some movements on the batten positions. I write about this as well in another post.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Downwind(?) sails</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have an awesome Tornado kite design, I have made myself one from cube finer, which was fist like hell. I couldn't believe the difference to a nylon or a polyester one. As always, it went to a new owner. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
For the next I made an upgraded version of the Chupacabra. I have now much different tools for designing that was available in 2007-2008, nice, analytic tools, so I thought it is time to rework the masterpiece. I had some leftovers from a nice polyester material and just made one from the new version. Just to use something on a weekend session. We were just matching up with some F20s, and I couldn't believed how fast we were downwind with this flat kite. Way, way faster and deeper than the others 4-8kts of wind. Of course the boat handling etc was in that as well, but after I opened my MacBook to look up again what I have done.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Haven't tried it upwind, for that matter I use the a very flat code0, the superflyer. Perhaps this year I will work on the Chupacabra new generation. We will see. One thing is sure, that the evolution of the downwind sails for the flying boat made me to think on a different way for the "normal" catamaran downwind sails as well).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Superflyer is great for downwind as well as there is area, but risky as the top of the mast is pretty weak.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
2016 was the second year with the brand 1D Sails. We have made lots of developments, lots of sails, and I think we were true to our tagline: "Providing the World with Better Sails".</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have some really great results this year, you can find them <a href="http://1d-onedesignsails.blogspot.co.at/p/blog-page.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>. I am really proud of the World champion titles and all the podiums.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thanks to our softwares and test sailors we have upgraded the one design and formula sails for 2017. The results show they are faster and more powerful than ever. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are involved in many foiling projects as well, in some of them as designer, in some of them as sailmakers as well. You can find nice photos about them on our <a href="https://www.facebook.com/1DSailsBalaton" target="_blank">Facebook page</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the year we have opened the 1D Loft no.2 and for the end of the year our new plotter, a Prosail MKIII has arrived finally. </div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b> We wish you a successful, health, windy, and fair 2017!</b></div>

We are in several foiling projects and more is coming. We do so much analysis on the sails for different foiling boats and we spent so much time to work in this area so decided to jump into some moth sails as well.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Hungary, there only few moths. I know only two mach2 and perhaps one or two homemade ones. The nice thing is one of my friends owns one. This is a good starting point, and we will have testing possibilities on Lake Garda.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the last months, I went through all the nice pictures and descriptions, where this class is now. In the loft we examined all the sails we found around.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Measured some masts as well on stiffness for the luff curves.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started the design process. I was confident on the flying shape, and all the details as I collected lots of datas, just went through some analysis and some small changes during the process. I wanted to push the whole project to get into the sailmaking and testing phase.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ended up in two versions, with two slightly different flying shape and twist, different head end roach. The other difference is one for bent boom.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The sails will be produced during the newt 1.5-2 weeks. I love the membrane sails, but now I chose a very light technora laminate for radial cut.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the Part 2 mainly photos of the construction will come and in Part 3 the testing.</div>

I get many emails and calls to make a really good cover for the given boat which is thick, but not too heavy and protects against water, UV.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A good production does not need to be thick and heavy.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjm2_S2x1m19ehcQRKcIZtCIGuWlME5WRp6FP4lOSOPc7Fh2thisE9X6EaC9Qz8SmiZWqCuruGawZzgiGwnJg1_Ojz5oOtsVP2RWxN0TZ-wv4wLbabeGMi4WqB4VhuUkclAjdrFNJCdt8/s1600/13418701_157745027973384_7532639348999509350_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjm2_S2x1m19ehcQRKcIZtCIGuWlME5WRp6FP4lOSOPc7Fh2thisE9X6EaC9Qz8SmiZWqCuruGawZzgiGwnJg1_Ojz5oOtsVP2RWxN0TZ-wv4wLbabeGMi4WqB4VhuUkclAjdrFNJCdt8/s400/13418701_157745027973384_7532639348999509350_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>The real enemy of the of boat is the sun and the UV. The water only in that case if it cannot be dried out easily and starts to create mildew.<br />
Under this, the best cover is protect against the UV, after raining it gets dry quickly and above all, easy to put on.<br />
<br />
For this, the lycra cover from <a href="http://www.uvcovers.com/" target="_blank">UVcovers</a> is the best solution. very light, stretchy, fits perfectly to the boat, very easy to apply and if gets wet, dries out awesome fast. Above all it comes with nice colors.<br />
<br />
Any type of catamarans, dinghies or big boats, the choice is this cover.<br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: inherit;">For the 2008 Olympic Games some Tornado class teams developed a gennaker which could be used sailing upwind in very light breeze. This sail and the mystery around it made a huge storm within the class, and a South-American sailor started to call the sail Chupacabra.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #1d2129; font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px;">This sail is a slightly bigger version for a different boat, but using the famous Chupacabra development.</span></span></span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: inherit;">The really first talk about this sail was in autumn of 2015 and the project started in January 2016. The whole designing process was started from some Rhino drawings.</span></div>

<span style="color: #1d2129;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">The easy and on the other side the hard </span><span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">part was that the guys really knew what they want. I was sure I would like to use the Chupacabra shape, but i was not sure that i want any modifications on it and after </span></span><span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">consulting</span></span><span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14px;"> with Pablo, we have made some upgrades and the shape got ready.</span></span></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #1d2129;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px;">Material side it was no doubt that we should go for membrane. The big dilemma was to choose the DPI number as the sail must be very strong be soft and light as it will be used mainly in really light winds.</span></span></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #1d2129;"><span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-size: 14px;">Finally I think we have chosen the right DPI and the right fiber for this purpose. </span></span></span></span></div>

10-16. June, the Tornado Worlds were held in Lindau, Germany. We know quite well the place as we were racing a lot there with Libera in the good old times during the Libera Cup and Rund ums.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mainly it is a light wind place with flat water, but we know very well that some strange things can happen there.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have started to work on the new sails just after the 2015 Worlds. We knew that we need something new for really light wind.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And the journey began...</div>

We have made changes on the batten placing, draft positions and luff curve and a little bit of twist.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have ended up in a totally, radically new mainsail.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Jared tested it in April first and gave the following feedback:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<i>"It is a lot different to my current main. The draft is further back, and the sail is more sensitive. It was only 4-6 knots, so it was easy to over sheet the sail and make it too flat, but I think the top 3 battens were to stiff.<br />The sail was very responsive once I found the "sweet spot", and only had to make minor sheeting adjustments to keep optimum speed.<br />We won all three races on yardstick over the f18's, winning one race by over 1 leg.<br />Very interested in how it would handle 15+ knots."</i><br /><br /><span style="background-color: #fefefe; color: #4b4f56; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span>

<br />
Brett started to play with the battens, and his choice was very stiff carbon rods for the Worlds.<br />
Just about a month before the Worlds, Gavin Colby the current Hobie 16 World Champion came to me that he had downwind speed problems and he need a good kite. He ended up on the new 1D kite and he changed the jib too.<br />
<br />
On the practice race day, I got the info from the great friend and partner Roland Gaebler, that Brett has a really impressive speed.<br />
Brett's comments on the new main:<br />
<i>"Very flat but we sail with no cunningham and as long as we do not oversheet we are fast in flat water and light winds. Our speed was really pretty good, we were leading most of the race but lost out protecting the right on the last downwind although tthe final winner went even more right and passed us all.!!"</i><div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
We had to make some changes on Gav's jib battens before the regatta to fit better to the light wind.</div>
<div>
I have got the following feedback from Gav after the regatta on the new kite:</div>
<div>
<i>"The spinnaker certainly helped us immensely and we were never slow downwind."</i></div>
<div>
<br />
We had an interesting week during the regatta, from 1-3kts up to 20+. It is nice to see that our sail worked really well and in the hands of real pros and in different conditions.<br />
<br />
Now about the results. In open, Gavin Colby and Billy Leonard ended up at 2nd while Brett and Estele 3rd and they got to be the mixed World Champions. I am really happy and satisfied with these results and huge congratulates to the guys and to the girl :)<br />
<br />
This regatta was very important to us. When we started our brand last February, we made a plan to finish as high as possible on big regattas. In 2015 the 2nd place on the F16 Europeans was really fine which was followed by 4th place on the Tornado Worlds. We saw that we have the opportunity to go higher so started to focus and develop. We knew that, so it was the proof too.<br />
<br />
The Tornado class is very important to us as well. Not only, because we sail this boat, but it was the one of the most important classes for Giorgio and Pablo.<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I was a kid, a young windsurfer, I always wondered why the sailmaker and boardshapers comes out with new sets every year. Some years later I have started to pimp my sails with new battens, changing the luff curves or making different head shapes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started to write this post many weeks ago. When I returned to post it, always came out some more memories, thoughts. Now I wanted to write about the Tornado Worlds, as our sails are Mixed Worlds Champions and on the podium in open, but before that I think this post is much more relevant.<br />
<br />
I remember the summer of 1994. We were at Lake Garda with some friends for windsurfing. This was the first time I have met with Giorgio Zuccoli. He was sitting on his cat and talking to a local guy. I haven't understood anything but how he was changing the shape of the mainsail how he was moving around the sails, it filled me with wonder... Now, after more than 20 years it is really interesting to see as we continue his work. If someone told me this in that time, I couldn't believe.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A lot has changed since then. I am out of windsurfing (but it looks like it comes back into my life on the design side) and I am into catamaran sailing c/a 6 years on full throttle, but that passion for developing is still on.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We make new things in different classes year by year and now I found myself, if I don’t open SMAR Azure a day, it makes me hurt physically. It became a habit to observe and analyze, observe, analyze, observe analyze.... and work it out in Azure project</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are involved in many foiling projects and some classic things as well and we have customers who are keen to have always something new to go higher and faster.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This makes me and the whole team to go and seek always of new developments, to find new ways to be faster, better. These developments must match with the highest production quality,which is a must on each sails that leaves the loft.<br />
<br />
Now, the Tornado Worlds 2016 is over. The road to the regatta was hard, but we have learnt a lot of things (I will make a post on this regatta and the development). I mean not on design side, yes, of course we got huge experiences, but on the other side we had to face that we can do it. We are able to do these kind of developments for these really high level top sailors. I have found myself into a new way of communication, everyone knows what he wants and how to achieve that. It made a superboost to us.<br />
Now I have totally understood why it needs to develop time-to-time, the ideas of the new 2017 Tornado sails are in my sail design library and in the next months we start to test it.<br />
<br />
I have a supervisor, who helps me when I got stucked between two solutions/problems, or just supporting me mentally. Yes, he is Pablo Soldano, who taught me everything on sail making and sail designing.<br />
<br />
Pablo doing this very slightly, not to tell exact things, just giving some guiding rails.<br />
<br />
We have made a slightly bigger Code0, the Chupacabra XL, to a very well known boat (later there will be a post about this too). What took out the developing beast from me. That was the point where I have started to do what always I wanted to do. This sail together with the F16 and Tornado developments, plus the new foiling projects that we were invited to participate, gave me the answer why and when we have to develop.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
...and that's how we ending up in Providing the World with Better Sails.</div>
</div>

We got a special order to make an 8mod sport boat upgrade. The boat is not a normal 8 meter one design, it has a slightly longer carbon mast and a retractable bowsprit.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The task was to make as optimal mainsail and jib as possible for lighter wind sailing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyAnIikRM0uHZUKt0acDdfpAp5EdLKk88L6hzb9ux7hjqYahC-I9atwHdc0bzF-dPksVj-fPLkfc4SEcQDOHQhzQBfLIqiSuEx93ar6oVEvLG6VhQ6AmYO6NrQAgvSkf0iethEX7zh7ns/s1600/fullfront.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="221" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyAnIikRM0uHZUKt0acDdfpAp5EdLKk88L6hzb9ux7hjqYahC-I9atwHdc0bzF-dPksVj-fPLkfc4SEcQDOHQhzQBfLIqiSuEx93ar6oVEvLG6VhQ6AmYO6NrQAgvSkf0iethEX7zh7ns/s320/fullfront.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><h3>
Mainsail</h3>
<div>
As the customer is open to make a split-backstay, I chose a squarehead mainsail with a pretty big roach to gain more sail area and keep the higher aspect ratio. The sail is designed with six full battens and three reefs for higher wind sailing. </div>
<div>
The flying shape is somewhere in the middle. I didn't want to flat and neither too full sail as it could happens that hard to open the top so ended up at a nicely useable cursing/racing sail.</div>
<div>
To choose the material was a longer process, finally we chose a membrane construction with double sided taffeta and technora fibers.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

"The World Championship took place in Malaysia on Langkawi island from the 27 December to the 3 January. There was a very good spirit in the French team and we were very prepared physically and mentally. We had a lot of chance because the spot was windy and flat, our preferred conditions.. the level was very high, in particular the Australian and New Zealand crews. During the championship, we had a good speed and our tactics choice was trues compared to the other crews. Consequently we won all the races except one because Louis broke his trapeze and fall in water.<br />
The ISAF championship is incredible because we can meet different people from all around the world it’s very rewarding !<br />
Now we sail on Bimare X16 and 420, we hope to be qualified for the world open 420 Championship and if not we will try to win the world championship of F16 in Belgium.<br />
We are currently in engineer School (INSA Rennes) where we can compile sail and studies as very well." </blockquote>

This boat has already a set from us, which was made last year. <span style="text-align: justify;">The inventory contains the genoa, the mainsail, and a small jib. It turned out that the gap is too big between the jib and the genoa. The task was to make a mid-genoa which perform best from 4-6 beaufort.</span><br />

The Europa 30 class is a really Hungarian class, it contains really different boats so the class rules use the KLR formula to make the class more unified. Our sails are quite successful in this class. The first set was made in 2012 for the boat called "Fétis" ( HUN 16) and the second generation came in 2014-15.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We make again some sails for this class. One is for a perfectly renewed wooden Europa 30, called "Johanna" (HUN 2). The mast is modified, to a little bit shorter and the forestay attachment is repositioned. We helped the owner to find the right position of the forestay top attachment point with datas from our Analysis tool. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The boat will get a new mainsail and a genoa. The mainsail is ready, the genoa will be made after the mast get ready and we know the new measures.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We have a pretty nice design for this class, which has been modified as Johanna has a much straighter and more bulky mast so this sail got a different luff curve. Class rules with the KLR formula allows to play with the luff and foot lengths a lot. I chose to go for a maximum luff length which the mast allows with a higher cunningham point and a shorter foot length to have as high-aspect sail as much possible. </div>
<h4>
Construction</h4>
<div>
The chosen material is the RS5 dacron from Contender to be as light as possible but have enough strength and stability for the sail, with radial cut. The 1 full and three leech battens are secured with velcro and webbing to hold in place the super battens supplied by QuickBattens. The sail connects to the mast with nylon sliders and velcro/webbing strop to the boom. The clew and the reefs are with SR rings and webbings</div>
<div>
I am sure that we made a really beautiful and fast mainsail. </div>

Nice call. I do not really have a favorite project. I like all of them, because I can see the challenge in it. I really like to work with the sailors, find and understand their needs about sails, sailing styles, conditions. Under this, all the projects were favorites.</div>

<b>Favourit job:</b><br />
A project is built up with several tasks. On the white table my big favorites are the downwind sails. We have made a huge A2 early spring, I really liked that as well as the huge Code0s. They were bigger than our loft. It is a kind of brain cleaning process to glue them or make the long stitches on the perimeters and a challenge to manage it in a smaller places.<br />
In the office the favorites are the making of the small details, which makes the sail smarter and faster, all the tiny curves, flying shape modifications, entry and exit angles. It's fun.<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the last post of optimization <a href="http://onedesignsails.blogspot.hu/2016/02/f16-optimization-chp2k16-jib.html" target="_blank">I talked about the jib</a>. Let's see now the main motor, the mainsail.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Everything has started with this sail modification. A team from France asked me to make a more powerful sail for the Europeans. I was thinking a lot which direction to take as I was pretty happy with our first mainsail design. It had a 6 batten.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGBqremQysgdGIcESqv8BrnN3PAq6Hvpj-14RyUy5tg6ypw09HK3Onj3r0FGAlPoY-FhgzT1fXPEVsdkjYILNJ9xBjnP5CrX9Pi5RsR_ss6kUfjZBgD4LXEFAxaNW5zYnsLCFdaTPx10g/s1600/11138654_1665008267062424_3454715927038549967_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGBqremQysgdGIcESqv8BrnN3PAq6Hvpj-14RyUy5tg6ypw09HK3Onj3r0FGAlPoY-FhgzT1fXPEVsdkjYILNJ9xBjnP5CrX9Pi5RsR_ss6kUfjZBgD4LXEFAxaNW5zYnsLCFdaTPx10g/s400/11138654_1665008267062424_3454715927038549967_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As our F18 mainsail is pretty successful I chose to use the 7 batten layout. The first 7 batten set was made for the Europeans to Cesenatico. It was a little bit too much on the power side, as needed to use too much cunningham as the wind picked up a little.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

After the Europeans we continued the optimization.<span style="text-align: justify;"> I started to use our F18 shape too, with different luff curves for different conditions and crew weights. For hobby sailors or for ones who changing a lot the crew, I found the AP luff curve which is in the middle. The </span>#85 got the one, which is really good in shape wise and handling and batten layout is the one I like too. I gave a slightly bigger head to this design.</div>

The winter came and new ideas appeared. For the next generation, for the 2k16 mainsail I have modified the angle of the head for better flow and making some cut-down too for using more space on the mast. So the final cut was the FRA5, which was on the Paris Boatshow. Manu and Théo used it on the Martinique Cata Race with a <a href="http://onedesignsails.blogspot.hu/p/blog-page.html" target="_blank">great result</a> and the sails, showed their power and speed.</div>

This post is a little bit different, as we have our birthday. It happened exactly one year ago that the One Design Sails brand reborned after several decades of rest.<br />
<br />
I have started to work with sails - I can say- a long time ago. There was a point, when everything had a turn into a much higher state. This point was 4th February 2012. On this day, I met with Pablo Soldano to make more deeper our work together. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was a really great meeting and something started to change.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the next years, every year on or around this day something new, something great happens.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Something that changes everything. One year we have opened our loft, next year we have exhibited on the Düsseldorf Boatshow and started to raise my designing skill into new dimensions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last year on this day it came official that we leave the Ullman group and start (or continue) the 1D Sails brand.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A lot happened in the last one year, we have changed all of our machines, we got a new worker and we have reached goals that we were just dreaming of.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This year 4th February took again something new.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We set up a new loft, the 1D Loft2. This place is made for small sails, like jibs or the famous <a href="https://www.facebook.com/reversoproject/?fref=ts" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Reverso project mainsail</a> and downwind sails.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In this area, our new 40ft plotter/cutter will take place. The other place which we set up is a design office and meeting room.<br />
It was a big need for these to be able to separate the small and light sails from the big table and big sails and having a calm place where we can talk to customers and make the designs and work out the analysis and details calmly.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I will talk about these in details in the next posts. Perhaps I will make a loft tour :).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

I have started to write another post about this project it turned out to have different posts to the different sail types.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let's start it with the jib. The reason I have chosen this sail to start with is very simple. The last version got finished just right before Xmas and headed straightly to France and participating on the Martinique Cata Raid. It was a quite quick project for this sail, the time was far too short for the right and full analysis, we had to built the jib in an absolutely short time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br />
</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>By the way, the guys, Emmanuel Le Chapier and Théo Constance won the F16 class and got 4th overall, fighting against the F18s.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSLDCPUPxrko5vhz-GfW7pc3sNvrl_DVBFIpJObbnG8fJGysQSEzWKdn5JxRmMH-pH1QGmrAc9UhdfiK0-0XOyXXx9JNrX8MSe__E3sVE_ki4YyeoWdFWhemxk_FShaHxP6l38P75eokU/s1600/12592774_1021184407925429_8589276651687035396_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSLDCPUPxrko5vhz-GfW7pc3sNvrl_DVBFIpJObbnG8fJGysQSEzWKdn5JxRmMH-pH1QGmrAc9UhdfiK0-0XOyXXx9JNrX8MSe__E3sVE_ki4YyeoWdFWhemxk_FShaHxP6l38P75eokU/s400/12592774_1021184407925429_8589276651687035396_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The task was given, to make the jib more efficient in lighter winds but in choppy conditions. Our older jib is a really all round one, especially the membrane is a very stiff, powerful sail.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I modified the shape, the draft position a little bit, and I added a slightly more camber. I made some major changes on the head and on the leech too. I have chosen a slightly softer battens. Material vise, my choice got to be the PE05 1.5mil from Dimension Polyant, as it is a light but still stiff material, in this case no need to bother with the lifetime in this case. As a paneled sail, of course radial construction. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9wI_FrVpTS2Wcpj_Dr7yees0x2ytC7YrAZoI9Q2CAAvLKmgJhvqm2H-KmHjki1oI-lzNFd1O1YXjK2ttgPZzWuPvsFDGXYuDOTmfpB6RobMT5N2kXsCuF99y358XsnBJI2Uk6-vfj4dk/s1600/f16jibradial.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9wI_FrVpTS2Wcpj_Dr7yees0x2ytC7YrAZoI9Q2CAAvLKmgJhvqm2H-KmHjki1oI-lzNFd1O1YXjK2ttgPZzWuPvsFDGXYuDOTmfpB6RobMT5N2kXsCuF99y358XsnBJI2Uk6-vfj4dk/s400/f16jibradial.jpg" width="243" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Manu and Théo tested the 2K16 jib with the 2016 membrane mainsail in Martinique. (I will talk about the main in a <a href="http://onedesignsails.blogspot.hu/2016/02/f16-optimization-mainsail.html" target="_blank">different post</a>.) </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After going through the pictures and the first notes of the guys, it worked pretty well, and they used it in blowy conditions too, so no worries when the wind picks up during a regatta.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Of course, I will upgrade this post as we saw the videos and went through all the details and points with the guys.</div>

We have started our professional blog. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica"; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal;">As we wrote our thoughts on Facebook, it was hard to find them later. We found out to write the professional thoughts on a different site. </span></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
You can read about the projects we are working on, about our and ours sails’ results, and about some dilemmas, problems we face during some special projects and how we will solve it. </div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
I hope it will help to see more into our “backstage” and our every days work.</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
Have a great reading,</div>
<div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;">
